How to Handle Being More Ambitious Than Everyone Else - The Muse

How to Handle Being More Ambitious Than Everyone Else - The MuseHow to Handle Being More Ambitious Than Everyone Else Dont you think youre taking on way too much? Its a question that Ive heard often over the last few years- and it only gets increasingly aggravating each time its asked. Whats wrong with being ambitious and wanting mora? Doesnt anyone else feel the way I do?Luckily, yes. Marie Forleo, a life coach and generally awesome person, recently published a great article (and subsequent video) about why people say that youre taking on too much. Her reasons were straightforward Theyre either not as motivated as you are, or theyre trying to show concern for your well-being. If the problem isnt the latter, whats an ambitious professional to do? Unfortunately, the answer is not to magically transform the people around you and turn them all into go-getters. Instead, its to find a new tribe of people who are just like you. 1. Find a (Small) Networking GroupTheres a trick to finding a useful networking group that many people dont know- the more specific it is, the better. For example, when I first started looking into networking groups geared toward entrepreneurship, it was really intimidating- the sheer number of people at these shindigs overwhelmed me. I went to one event with well over 100 people, and I walked away with a stack of business cards, but approximately zero promising connections.Once I gave more thought to what I was really looking for, I hit two jackpots The Lady Project and bSmart Guide. Both connected me to (a much smaller group of) smart, driven, and successful women who are just as motivated as I am. Theyve given me a lot enthusiastic peers, amazing mentors, and a number of awesome experiences- like getting to speak at The Lady Projects summit last year Its an ambitious professionals dream.2. Get Active on Social MediaIntimidated by in-person networking? Thats OK. Social media is a great go-to if youre looking for people who share your passion and excitement. Like finding a networking group, the trick is to get specific. After all, there are over 360 million users on LinkedIn and over 230 million people on Twitter, so the more youre able to whittle those numbers down, the easier it gets.Need a little help finding your perfect online networking spot? There are plenty of places to get started. On Twitter, this detailed chat list is your best friend. Oh, and this post from Sprout Social can help you narrow down your hashtag choices. For LinkedIn, two great places to begin are industry and alumni groups (Lily Zhang has a helpful post about finding LinkedIn communities worth your time here).A note to keep in mind Some of the best social media networking opportunities are those that are a little exclusive (i.e., not letting in every single person who requests to join). So, dont be discouraged if youre not invited in- instead, take it as a sign that you need to get more niche. 3. Be Open to Helping OthersAmbitious people often get so wrapped up in their own goals that they forget that others are also trying to accomplish big things. In doing so, they miss important opportunities to connect with like-minded people. Which is a shame, because people will always want to help people who helped them. Its a clich, but its also true. Regardless of the industry someone is working in, if you find a fellow ambitious professional who wants to do things, offer to help that person. Never underestimate the power of small favors when building relationships, especially with motivated and enthusiastic people. For example, I once helped a PR contact get in touch with a magazine editor for her client, and several days later, she offered to help with my websites PR for free. Pretty sweet deal, right?Being ambitious and motivated is an awesome thing, so dont let anyone tell you otherwise. Instead, find the people who are going to inspire you to do even more.Photo of hiker courtesy of Shutterstock.

Dropping Names During a Job Interview

Dropping Names During a Job InterviewDropping Names During a Job InterviewHere are tips for dropping names during a job interviewBe formal. When the hiring manager introduces herself to you as Lucy Smith, be sure to address her as Ms. Smith. If she says for you to call her by her first name, only then should you do so.Do your research.Find out ahead of time the people whom youll be meeting with and practice saying their names. As a cheat, you can always have their names written down on a piece of paper in your folder that you can refer to.Remember the name. You might be nervous when you first step into the office and not hear the rolles name correctly. So its okay to ask for clarification to ensure that you heard their name correctly- and are pronouncing it properly. After all, theres nothing worse than calling someone- especially a person who has the power to hire you- by the wrong name.Say her name.As you point out your personality traits that make you perfect for the position, be su re to also mention the persons name again. For example, you can say, Ms. Smith, I believe my 10+ years in IT will be an asset to this position and your organization.Personalize your goodbye. When exiting the interview, offer your thanks by shaking hands and saying, It welches a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Smith. Thank you for your time. How Trusting Yourself Can Benefit Your Career -The Muse

How Trusting Yourself Can Benefit Your Career -The MuseHow Trusting Yourself Can Benefit Your Career Nine years ago, I made a stupid decision. I left a great job at an extraordinary company, Capital One. But, Id been there for a decade and felt worn out at the ripe old age of 35. With responsibilities, a family at home, and plenty of stock options waiting to vest, I should have asked for a six-month sabbatical, but instead I resigned. What would I do during that time? I would take a step back from the daily grind to figure out what I should do next and how could I make my career meaningful again. Rather than sitting in a cubicle hoping the answer would come to me in between answering emails and meetings, I would get away from it all and listen to the Universe. Turns out, it welches the best decision of my career. I know not everyone has the option to walk away from a salary. But everyone does have the option to listen to the Universe even if it seems a little crazy at the time. Heres what I learned in the process.Even if You Do Not Decide, You leise Have Made a ChoiceI gave my notice on a typical grey January day. Yet as I left my boss office, the sky looked bluer. The grass was greener. Food tasted better. Only after breaking free did I realize how strongly inertia had locked me in.The thing is, few white collar roles are insufferable- and that makes it all too easy to suffer through a job simply because nothings wrong. However, as my senses sharpened in my first few days off the job, I realized nothing wrong should not be confused with something right.Heres a litmus test Whats your outlook heading into work each morning? Be honest with yourself. In the right job, its fair to expect youll look forward to going into work most of the week, be ambivalent at least once, and mildly dread one day. (Usually Monday.) Of course, even a job you love will have its bad days. But there should be more good than bad. mora days you look forward to than days you dread.By accep ting that youre unhappy at your job, youre making a choice to feel that way. So dont- decide to be happy, decide to take control of your own career.Your Career Depends on You Seeing the Right Questions, Rather Than the Right AnswersOne month into my experiment, I could sense my batteries recharging. I was fortunate enough to be able to spend most days taking care of my family as well as myself. My sons got to go to the park each day, my wife got to eat a home-cooked meal, and I got to spend time doing the simple things- exercising and reading. Now that my regimen included time to simply think, I started having ideas again. It was novel and luxurious. And it was the natural consequence of fencing off this time and granting myself permission to explore my own thoughts. Some days I had brilliant thoughts, other days not so much. Liberating myself from a cubicle and the day-to-day pressure to deliver unleashed my creativity. This period in my career taught me to accept that its OK to hav e a lot of ideas, even half-baked ideas. While working backwards from a clear goal can be very important, I learned that sometimes the best ideas arise just from going on an open-ended journey. You dont always need to have the strategy and the answers and the plan. The Universe Will Speak if You Commit to ListeningOK, I know what youre thinking- and yes, I just about ran out of money. Having time to think is wonderful, but it doesnt pay the bills.Let me come clean. Im not proud. Even though I felt that my career goal was to be part of the startup community, I considered I might have to return to Corporate America, and I interviewed at a Fortune 500 company. A little voice in my head said, Dad was right you should have done the smart thing and just taken a sabbatical. Whats this nonsense about listening to the Universe? But, just as my anxiety was peaking, the Universe spoke to me. And it came in the form of an email from a former Capital One senior executive. He heard I might be on th e market- and he just happened to know a great opportunity. As it turns out, he was subject to a non-solicit and was prohibited from contacting current employees about job opportunities. If I had taken a sabbatical- the smart approach- I would have been an employee and still off limits. Finally, I got official word from the Universe that Id made the right decision. Everything in the past year had lumineszenzdiode to this moment, this email.Long story short The email turned into freelance consulting for a year, which in turn led to my co-founding a venture capital firm, QED Investors. I love my job, to the point that my wife comments that I bleed QED. And its only because I made the nominally stupid decision to commit- truly commit- to listen to the Universe. My advice dont let yourself be a victim of inertia. You deserve a satisfying career. Find a way to explore, listen, and meet the Universe when it speaks.Photo of man in winter courtesy of Shutterstock.

Workplace Gender Discrimination Against Men and Women

Workplace Gender Discrimination Against Men and WomenWorkplace Gender Discrimination Against Men and WomenSocietal norms, rules, and roles instruct and encourage men to value (or devalue) women even in the United States even where there are anti-discrimination laws in place to discourage such attitudes. In the workplace, women are frequently subjected to subtle discrimination by both sexes. Qualified women may be passed over for promotions because they become pregnant (pregnancy discrimination).Jobs may be offered to a less qualified male applicant just because he is male. Women are also more likely to be judged by their looks and how they dress than their male counterparts. On a notenzeichen of contradiction, women are not only discriminated against for being pretty or provocative they are also discriminated against for being not pretty enough, too old, or, in some positions (especially sales and public relations) for not being sexy enough. If men get more time off, better compensat ion packages, or more benefits than women based on unfair gender bias, its also gender discrimination and it is illegal. Despite protective anti-discrimination laws making gender discrimination illegal, management practices at small, mid-size, and even giant corporations often still favor the advancement of men. Companies Sued for Discrimination Against Women Microsoft.Women atMicrosoftfiled 238 complaints with the companys HR department between 2010 and 2016, including 108 complaints about sexual harassment and 119 about gender discrimination. There were also eight complaints of retaliation and three about pregnancy discrimination. The court documents are part of a gender discrimination lawsuit against Microsoft filed in 2015 by Katherine Moussouris, a computer security researcher who worked at the company from 2007-2014. She claims she welches passed over for promotions while male colleagues, who were less qualified, were promoted. Two other Microsoft employees Holly Muencho w and Dana Piermarini later joined the suit. As of 2018, no trial date has been set. Computer Sciences Corporation. CSC welches sued by a former high-level female executive who was fired after identifying and complaining about pattern and practice gender discrimination and sexual harassment. She was told to quit complaining. She did not, and she was fired in 2012. Walmart. In 2011, Walmart dodged a bullet when the Supreme Court ultimately overturned a decision that would have held Walmart accountable in a class action suit. The justices ruled that the women did not share enough in common to qualify as a class in what would have been the largest class action discrimination suit in history. However, individual lawsuits against Walmart continue to be filed. Quest Diagnostics and AmeriPath. The two labs have been sued in federal court for widespread and systematic discriminatory practices against women. Without admitting guilt, in 2012 the company agreed to pay $152 million to more than 5 ,000 current and former female employees. The company also agreed to spend $22.5 million to institute new human resources policies and procedures. Gender Discrimination Happens to Men, Too Its not as common, but men are discriminated against too. Ventura Corporation. Ventura Corporation, a wholesaler of beauty products, was sued by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for discriminating against men because the company refused to hire men as sales reps. The EEOC charged in its suit that Ventura engaged in a pattern or practice of refusing to hire men as Zone Managers and Support Managers. The EEOC also alleged that Ventura promoted Erick Zayas into a Zone Manager position after he complained about its discriminatory practices, only to set him up for failure and termination in retaliation for his opposition to Venturas sex-based hiring practices. According to the terms of the 2014 consent decree settling the suit, Ventura paid $354,250 to settle the lawsuit, inc luding a payment to Zayas of $150,000. Lawrys. One of the most famous cases of male discrimination was a class action suit against Lawrys, a California-based corporation operating restaurants in Las Vegas, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Corona del Mar, Calif. Lawrys had a tradition of hiring only female waitstaff. The only reason for this was tradition. A substantial verdict against Lowrys was the result of the class action suit in 2016. The EEOC reached a settlement in the sex discrimination class action lawsuit for $1,025,000. Yahoo. Gregory Andersonwas employed in Yahoos media division until he was fired in 2014. He filed a lawsuit against the tech giant, alleging the companys performance management system was arbitrary and unfair. Yahoo uses a numeric ranking system to evaluate employees performance and often fires those with the lowest scores, according to the suit. The complaint says that when male and female employees got equally low scores, the women are favor ed and the men are fired. Jimmy Fallon.Paul Tarascio, aformer stage manager forLate Night With Jimmy Fallonfiled a lawsuit against NBC Universal, Fallon, and employees ofLate Night, alleging that the show has a gender bias. In papers filed in 2013, Paul Tarascioclaimed he was demoted while working for Fallon after being told byLate Nightdirector David Diomdi,Jimmy just prefers to take direction from a woman.Tasarscio lost his court case. The MeToo Movement The MeToo movement was birthed in 2017 when sexual harassment claims were made against Hollywood Mogul Harvey Weinstein by actress Ashley Judd who spotlighted the issue by giving her story to major news outlets. Years earlier, Weinstein had threatened Judd if she did not agree to perform a sexual act on him. Following that, dozens of other celebrities (including Gwyneth Paltrow) came forward with sexual misconduct claims (and more than one claim of rape) against Weinstein. In 2018, Harvey Weinstein was convicted of rape. Weins teins case dominated the news- in part because of the extent of his egregious behavior but also because of the high-profile women he preyed on. However, a year before Weinstein (in 2017), beloved comedian Bill Cosby was accused of drugging (and in one case raping) several dozen women going back 20 years beginning with accuserAndrea Constand, a protege. Even though nearly 60 women came forward to tell their stories of sexual advances and misconduct, Cosbys 2017 trial ended in a mistrial. However, he was retired in 2018 and convicted of three counts of rape. Men Fired in 2017 Weinstein and Cosby were not alone. In 2017, such entertainment luminaries as NBCs Matt Lauer, PBSs Charlie Rose, and New York Metropolitan Opera conductor James Levine were all fired after claims of sexual abuse and harassment were found to be true. Employees in the workplace are protected by the law against sexual discrimination and are protected from superiors who use their position to prey on them. The Me Too movement let it be known that inappropriate behavior should be reported to HR, to management, to colleagues, and associates without delay.

What if we just banned meetings

What if we just banned meetingsWhat if we just banned meetingsThe no-meeting day has recently become a phenomenon of sorts. The idea is to give employees an entire work day that their company, department or team has designated 100 percent meeting-free. Companies in the technology, healthcare and business sectors have been eager to implement this practice to create space for employees to engage in focused work for a full day. An organization that adopts this approach views meetings as a disruption to daily productivity. As a team collaboration expert, I fully support finding ways to increase employees uninterrupted work time. However, without efforts to address the root causes of unproductive meetings, the power of the no-meeting day is limited. The no-meeting day doesnt solve the root problem of unproductive meetingsThe no-meeting day has some benefits. Teams that adopt this practice report an increase in productivity. However, eliminating meetings on a given day simply pushes unproduc tive meetings off to other weekdays, potentially making those days mora stressful. Plus, the no-meeting day is not a panacea for every kind of team. Consider sales or client-facing teams that require regular real-time interaction with people Cross-functional teams may not fully benefit unless every team or department implements the practice. There is no one-size-fits-all approach different individuals and different tasks require working in different ways. Extroverts may prefer having their days broken into segments of individual and group activity. Also, certain tasks are better completed as a group. If you do choose to have a no-meeting day, team leaders shouldEmbrace the practice and create a culture that supports it. You should model the rule by not scheduling meetings on the designated days. Mixed messages can confuse employees and damage trust.Clearly communicate the goal of implementing the practice to your people, which is to provide more uninterrupted work time. You should als o provideguidance for implementationand take steps to ensure employee buy-in and commitment. Not rely solely on the no-meeting day to solve an organizations problem with meetings. The day should be a part of an overall strategy that addresses the root causes of those problems. How to make meeting days work for you, tooWhile a no-meeting day might be a good start, a more thoughtful approach is to havefewer and more effectivemeetings every day of the week. Try the following holistic approaches to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of your meetings.Cancel any meeting that doesnt have an agenda with a clear meeting outcome.Sound extreme? Its just practical. Many of my clients share that defining a meetingsdesired outcome, or what they intend to achieve in a meeting, is the most helpful meeting practice theyve ever adopted. Status update meetings and recurring meetings often lack the desired outcome People meet out of habit instead of thinking critically about the event. If youre n ot the meeting leader and you receive a meeting invitation without the desired outcome, be proactive and ask the meeting leader to provide one. Remember If a meeting leader cant clearly articulate the outcome shed like to achieve in a meeting, the meeting will likely be a waste of time.Encourage team members to decline meetings if its not the best use of their time. One advantage of a no-meeting day is that it gives employees permission to decline a meeting. If a meeting is not the best use of ones time, allow a team member todecline the meeting and offer alternative ways to contribute. For example, you can ask team members who will miss a meeting to provide thoughts in advance via email or chat.End every meeting with a wrap-up.A meeting wrap-up clarifies what was - or wasnt - accomplished. Capture the next steps, decisions and key learnings so what was agreed upon in the meeting does not get forgotten or lost, and there is follow-through on tasks. Wrap-ups provide an opportunity to solidify alignment and celebrate the meetings results. Allocate three-to-five minutes on your agenda for the meeting wrap-up.If the no-meeting day was created to provide employees more focused time for work, the next step is to improve and reduce the number of meetings that they do attend.Mamie Kanfer Stewart is the Founder CEO ofMeeteorand author ofMomentum Creating Effective, Engaging and Enjoyable Meetings. Whether you're writing the next chapter of your career or hoping to take your current career to the next level, consider these three strategies to help you make the most of each networking opportunity: Generosity is never having to keep score Insurgent, the second book in the best-selling dystopian trilogy Divergent, presents two schools of thought on relationships. Peter, who gets sick to his stomach at the idea of being indebted to another person, believes that people only do things for you for one of two reasons: If they want something in return or if they feel like they owe you something. A typical cynic, he's chronically paranoid about who's winning in the relationship. It's death by scorecard. Scarcity thinking. Running a race that isn't being held, winning a trophy that doesn't exist. Tobias, on the other hand, reminds him that those aren't the only two reasons people do things for you. Sometimes they do them because they love you. That's the healthiest, smartest and frankly, least labor-intensive approach to business relationships. Throwing away our scorecards. Treating networking as an infinite field, where we're not playing to win, we're playing to keep the game going. And in the process, we create growth for all parties involved, no matter what the score is. I've found this approach to relationships to be surprisingly liberating. Instead of trying to arrive at some static point of perfect balance with each other, which, frankly, is a perfectionist ideal that's never found in actual life, we're free to enter the mysterious complexity of the interpersonal dynamic. We're able to tear up our scorecards, accept the fact that nobody really wins at relationships, and generously extend acceptance, forgiveness, and gratitude to each other without the pressure of counting. Remember, racking up points blocks the flow of new opportunities. The moment somebody starts keeping score, the relationship starts to die. LET ME ASK YOU THIS: Are you poisoning your relationships by keeping track of who sacrifices more? LET ME SUGGEST THIS: At your next networking event, write on the back of everyone's business cards a short message about one tangible way you might be able to help them. Email them the next day with your ideas. Pay it forward. I find something new every time I'm with you Coltrane's band was famous for playing the same songs in the second set as they played in the first one, just to see if they could find something new they didn't find earlier in the evening. Of course, they always did. They never stepped in the same musical river twice. That's the beauty of jazz. If you do it right, redundancy becomes a mathematical impossibility. The same rule applies to the networking process. If we impose a standing order of curiosity, and discovery and growth, practicing the discipline of seeing things with wide-open wonder, we make it easy to find something new every time we're with each other. It's all about surprise. Neuroscientists have actually conducted mountains of research on this very issue, proving that the human brain hates boredom and loves surprises. In fact, regardless of whether or not people say they like surprises, typically life's unexpected pleasures are more rewarding than expected ones. That's all surprise is. It's the emotion we feel when we encounter the unexpected. And if we commit to seeking what is fresh, spontaneous and interesting in the same place we looked for it yesterday, nothing can strip us of myriad opportunities for wonder. Every new season becomes an opportunity to grow closer to each other; to learn to understand one another's evolving business needs as the years go by. And that's a really courageous form of interpersonal growth. Still hoping for fresh wind. Still weaving a tapestry of pure joy and beauty. Still wanting to get lost in a private world of our own personal delight and awe. LET ME ASK YOU THIS: How many of your relationships have enough uncertainty to make life sizzle and renew your sense of wonder? LET ME SUGGEST THIS: Next time you have lunch with a colleague, see if you can finish your meal first. That means you're asking the most questions and talking the least. Related:Social Networking: How to Connect with Potential Employers Online What can you do in five minutes that will change somebody's life? Creating a value inventory can be a frustrating and uncomfortable exercise. Especially if you're too humble to turn off your modesty filter. But if you're willing to engage your imaginations, own your authentic power and honestly appraise that which you bring to the table, there's no telling what you might accomplish. I have a friend who loves to ask his clients what they can do in five minutes that will change somebody's life. It's an extraordinary question for several reasons. For starters, it contains the verb do. This stimulates an action-oriented, interpersonal, skill-based response. It forces you to think about past experiences in which you expended emotional labor and had a profound impact on another person. The next element is the time constraint. By only giving yourself five minutes, it challenges you to concentrate your value into a practical, tight package that allows the person on the receiving end of your value to imagine the full scope of your power. And finally, there's the element of changing somebody's life, which is the kind of thought experiment the average person doesn't give themselves permission to conduct. LET ME ASK YOU THIS: What can you do in five minutes that will change somebody's life? I've had numerous moments like that in my own life on both sides of the equation. People, friends, mentors, and clients have made observations, given feedback, asked questions, and imparted strategies that literally altered my trajectory forever. Conversely, I've also sat down with people on a number of occasions and offered the same life-changing gift to them. Both of these highly human experiences make you feel fully alive, fully present to the possibilities of life. And the exciting part is, each one of us can take part, but only if we're willing to accept and deploy the love that makes it possible. Hoff explained it best in his translation of the ancient eastern scripture. No matter how useful we may be, sometimes it takes us a while to recognize our own value. If you want to gain a better sense of your highest abilities, ask and answer the question. LET ME SUGGEST THIS: Next week, email five colleagues and ask them the same question about your own value. This will help you gain a broader understanding of your abilities for your career progression. Remember, the secret to networking is that it's not about being the life of the party, it's about bringing other people to life at the party. Starting today, stop keeping score, lead with your curiosity and think about the kind of value you can deliver in short bursts. Click on the following link for more networking advice. How to Tell If a Layoff is Coming and How to Prepare

How to Tell If a Layoff is Coming and How to Prepare How to Tell If a Layoff is Coming and How to Prepare How to Tell If a Layoff is Coming - and What You Can Do to Prepare Look out for these five signs that a layoff is around the corner - and then decide what you̢۪ll do about it. Unfortunately, layoffs are a part of life for some companies and individuals. If you've never been laid off, you probably know someone who has. According to outplacement consultancy, Challenger Gray Christmas, U.S. employers cut about 418,770 jobs in 2017. Despite the reality that the figure is the lowest annual total since 1990, companies are still restructuring all the time, which means layoffs will continue to impact employees across every industry. No one has a crystal ball that can warn them when a layoff is coming, but there are some telltale signs of an impending reduction in force. The following five scenarios are some common examples of slight changes that could indicate an impending layoff. You can hear a pin drop When an organization is considering whether a layoff is necessary, often management knows before everyone else. If job cuts are looming on the horizon, you may notice managers and HR spending more time behind closed doors, the quarterly town hall meeting might get canceled, or your manager may communicate less than normal. If you sense that somehow things don't seem the same, your sixth sense may be trying to tell you something about your future at the company. The company just announced big losses Disappointing business results are a strong indicator that organizational changes are coming. Lower-than-expected revenue or the failure of an important business unit will often trigger a layoff in companies as they look for ways to balance expenses with falling revenue. If your company is not performing well, chances are a layoff is on the table as a possible fix. Some roles are redundant Many companies often have more than one employee who performs the same function. There is often plenty of work to go around, and companies benefit from having a backup for important roles in the event of a resignation or employee absence. However, if you start to notice there's a bit too much support, you can bet management has noticed it as well. If you have five staff accountants in your unit, but new technology or more efficient processes make it possible for three accountants to get the work done, layoffs may be around the corner. Related:Ask Amanda: How Can I Bounce Back After Getting Laid Off? A merger or acquisition is coming Layoffs are often a natural outcome of merger and acquisition activity. When two companies come together, there may be overlap in some areas, leading to the decision to eliminate positions. Not every merger leads to layoffs, and in some cases, companies add new jobs when they merge. But just in case, if your company announces a potential merger or acquisition, ask questions and try to understand how it could impact your job. Company spending slows One of the signs that job cuts may be on the way is reduced corporate spending. If you're suddenly told to hold off on a project that requires an investment in new technology to get it off the ground, or that there's a freeze of all non-essential company travel, trouble could be coming. If extra thrift is the order of the day, then ask around and see what the cause could be. If no one seems to know, a corporate reorganization with layoffs could be the company's answer. How to prepare for the layoff Being laid off can be scary, but it can also be the time to relaunch your career. To be fully prepared for whatever lies ahead, there are some specific steps you can take to make sure you're in the best possible position to bounce back from a layoff. For example: Start your job search: Sometimes it's better to jump ship before you're pushed into the water. If you have a strong sense that your company may begin eliminating certain positions, then update your resume, get in touch with your network, and begin exploring new job opportunities. Build your skills: If you think you could be affected by a layoff, focus on expanding your skill set with training, continuing education courses, or a new certification. If you suddenly find yourself in the job market, those new skills will come in handy. Stick around: You may see a layoff coming and decide to do nothing. If you're considering retiring, you might not be too worried about being laid off. Or maybe you know your company traditionally offers generous severance packages, and you'd like to stick around to get one. Whatever your reason, you may be among the few who aren't all that worried about being laid off. Sometimes the writing is on the wall and layoffs appear to be inevitable. Other times, there are only signs of an impending layoff, with little clarity about its impact on your job. No one has all the answers, but if you read the signs and prepare yourself, you can survive and move on after a layoff. Click on the following link for more job-search advice. Public vs. Private Resumes Once your resume is on Indeed, you can choose to make it “Public” or “Private.” There are benefits to both options. When you make your resume public, it is visible to anyone. Visitors to a public resume page can forward, save, or download the resume as a PDF or email you through a secure contact form. Your street address is visible only to you, and your phone number and email address are only visible when you apply for a job. One benefit of a public resume is that hiring managers can find you and reach out to you if they think you might be right for a job. This is a good option if you are unemployed, and do not care who sees that you are job searching. When you make your resume private, employers cannot find your resume, so they cannot contact you if they think you might be right for a job. They can only see your resume when you attach it when applying for a job. This is a good idea if you are employed, and you do not want your boss to be able to find you and see that you are job searching. Whether or not you make your resume private, you can still download a copy of your resume for your records. How to Delete your Resume If you dont want your resume online any longer, or if you want to start with a new document, click on  Ã¢€œRemove your resume profile” and it will be removed from the system. If a job doesn’t have the “Apply with your Indeed Resume” link, it likely means you have to apply for the job directly on the company’s website.   How Employers Can Find You Employers looking for job candidates can search through public resumes by job title, company, education, location, or keyword. They can then download a resume as a PDF or email the job seeker through a secure contact form. Indeed.com users can also forward resumes to colleagues or other contacts who might be interested in a particular user’s resume. You can also choose to promote your Indeed.com resume on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter. If you are comfortable making your job search public, this is a great way to increase the visibility of your resume, and use your social network to promote your job search. Tips for Making Your Indeed.com Resume Stand Out Read samples. Before starting your resume, check out some sample resumes from people in your industry. Also, look at some of the public Indeed resumes. You can search by job title to get a sense of what other people in your field include in their resumes.Consider adding a headline or summary. Under the “Basics” section of the Indeed resume, you can include an optional headline and summary. A headline is a brief phrase that highlights what makes you stand out as a candidate. A resume summary is slightly longer â€" a couple of sentences or bullet points â€" and goes into more detail about how you might add value to a company. Consider adding one or both of these as a way to show hiring managers, at a glance, why you are a great candidate. Know what employers are looking for. Because you are using one resume for many jobs, you want to make sure the resume is tailored to the specific industry in which you are job searching. Make sure you know the skills and experience  people in your industry are looking for in job candidates. Read some job listings on Indeed in your field to get a sense of what hiring managers want. Then, highlight relevant experiences and skills in your resume.Include keywords. One way to make your resume connect to your industry is to include common industry keywords. These might be words you often see in job listings in your field. For example, if you are applying for a job in marketing, you might include certain skills keywords like “SEO expert” or “analytics experience.” Emphasize achievements. In your descriptions of previous jobs, emphasize not simply what you did, but what you achieved. Whenever possible, quantify your achievements. For example, say how much money you helped a company make, or explain how your new filing system increased efficiency by a certain percentage. Numbers show an employer, at a glance, how you will add value to their company.Fill out all relevant information. Indeed provides a number of options for resume sections, including “Awards,” “Links,” “Patents,” and more. Fill out all relevant sections. For example, if you are applying for a job in academia, fill out the “Publications” section with any articles or books you have published. However, don’t fill out sections that are not relevant to your industry or your experience. If you have no military experience, for example, skip the “Military Service” section. Edit, edit, edit. As always, thoroughly edit your resume before uploading it for a job, making it public, or sharing it with someone. Click “View Edit Resume” to see how it will look to an employer. Proofread the resume, and consider asking a friend or family member to look it once over as well.

Why smart people dont multitask

Why smart people don't multitask Why smart people don't multitask You may have heard that multitasking is bad for you, but new studies show that it kills your performance and may even damage your brain.Every time you multitask you aren’t just harming your performance in the moment; you may very well be damaging an area of your brain that’s critical to your future success at work.Research conducted at Stanford University found that multitasking is less productive than doing a single thing at a time. The researchers found that people who are regularly bombarded with several streams of electronic information cannot pay attention, recall information, or switch from one job to another as well as those who complete one task at a time.A special skill? But what if some people have a special gift for multitasking? The Stanford researchers compared groups of people based on their tendency to multitask and their belief that it helps their performance. They found that heavy multitaskers- those who multitask a lot and feel that it boosts their performance- we re actually worse at multitasking than those who like to do a single thing at a time. The frequent multitaskers performed worse because they had more trouble organizing their thoughts and filtering out irrelevant information, and they were slower at switching from one task to another.Ouch.Multitasking reduces your efficiency and performance because your brain can only focus on one thing at a time. When you try to do two things at once, your brain lacks the capacity to perform both tasks successfully.Multitasking lowers IQResearch also shows that, in addition to slowing you down, multitasking lowers your IQ. A study at the University of London found that participants who multitasked during cognitive tasks experienced IQ score declines that were similar to what they’d expect if they had smoked marijuana or stayed up all night. IQ drops of 15 points for multitasking men lowered their scores to the average range of an 8-year-old child. So the next time you’re writing your boss an emai l during a meeting, remember that your cognitive capacity is being diminished to the point that you might as well let an 8-year-old write it for you.Brain damage from multitasking? It was long believed that cognitive impairment from multitasking was temporary, but new research suggests otherwise. Researchers at the University of Sussex in the UK compared the amount of time people spend on multiple devices (such as texting while watching TV) to MRI scans of their brains. They found that high multitaskers had less brain density in the anterior cingulate cortex, a region responsible for empathy as well as cognitive and emotional control. While more research is needed to determine if multitasking is physically damaging the brain (versus existing brain damage that predisposes people to multitask), it’s clear that multitasking has negative effects.Neuroscientist Kep Kee Loh, the study’s lead author, explained the implications:“I feel that it is important to create an awareness that the way we are interacting with the devices might be changing the way we think and these changes might be occurring at the level of brain structure.”The EQ connectionNothing turns people off quite like fiddling with your phone or tablet during a conversation. Multitasking in meetings and other social settings indicates low Self- and Social Awareness, two emotional intelligence (EQ) skills that are critical to success at work.TalentSmart has tested more than a million people and found that 90% of top performers have high EQs. If multitasking does indeed damage the anterior cingulate cortex (a key brain region for EQ) as current research suggests, doing so will lower your EQ while it alienates your coworkers.Bringing it all togetherIf you’re prone to multitasking, this is not a habit you’ll want to indulge- it clearly slows you down and decreases the quality of your work. Even if it doesn’t cause brain damage, allowing yourself to multitask will fuel any existing difficulties you have with concentration, organization, and attention to detail.Travis Bradberry is the coauthor of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and the cofounder of TalentSmart. This article originally appeared on  LinkedIn.

Theres No Such Thing as a Video Resume

There's No Such Thing as a Video Resume There's No Such Thing as a Video Resume A proper video bio that tells your story, and doesn’t simply repeat your resume, requires more than you and a video camera.By William Arruda and Catharine Fennell  When you strip away all the basic requirements that are expected in any given role - hard skills and experience - what’s left? Everything that cannot be said in a resume! Yet, ironically, these are the critical personal elements that make the difference in decision making - your soft skills and how you fit within the culture. This is the tipping point that will get a hiring manager to take a second look. They often determine longevity, loyalty, career satisfaction and productivity for employees.Hiring managers have a hard job. They must review hundreds of resumes to decide whom they would like to interview. It’s challenging to discern soft skills in text format resumes. Even the best-written resume won’t necessarily put your name on the interview list. With about seven qualified candidates for each open position , you need to think beyond the resume to career marketing tools that give you the opportunity to express your personal brand. One job-seeker tool that’s gaining popularity is a video bio. Video gives you the opportunity to convey soft skills like communication style, passion, ideas, demeanor, confidence and personality.A video bio is not just any video and it’s not a video resume. It is a multimedia tool that’s designed to communicate your story (hence bio) and not simply repeat what’s in your resume. In fact, a video bio is everything that cannot be communicated in your resume. It allows you to share achievements in a storytelling way and helps you stand out from the crowd by making a real connection with your prospective manager. Because words account for approximately 6 percent of a complete communication, your written career marketing tools ( cover letter, resume, thank-you note, etc.) limit your ability to create emotional connections with the people who are making deci sions about you. When you combine those traditional career documents with video, you present a holistic view of your candidacy. You need to think of your video bio as an important element in your career marketing package and build a strategy that tells the whole story.Extract the Best of YouAs with all of your career marketing materials, quality trumps quantity. Yet the easy availability of video cameras - Flip videos, iPhones, etc. - gives us the false impression that a video bio is a do-it-yourself project. A great video is tough to do on your own, which is why career-minded professionals are investing in professionally produced, shot and edited video bios with a specific process that’s designed to extract the best of you, your performance and your message. No matter how advanced the technology gets, the formula for the content and direction that goes into the video is what makes a great video. Here are five tips for getting the most from your video bio: Start with your personal brand. Know what you want to say and what personality characteristics you want to convey. Think strategically. Define what you want to include in all of your career marketing materials and ensure that together they tell a clear, complete and compelling story. Prepare. Just as professional athletes spend hundreds of hours preparing for a few hours of play, the right preparation will ensure the best outcome. Don’t get in front of the camera until you are confident with what you want to say. Commit to quality. Hire the right resources or work with a one-stop-shop video-bio producer. Ensure the proper audio, lighting, etc., to position yourself in the most positive light. Spread it everywhere. Upload it to video-sharing sites like Facebook, YouTube, Viddler, TubeMogul and Vimeo. Include a link on your resume, in your LinkedIn profile and on your blog. Use it in your e-mail signature. Tweet your video to your followers. If you are looking to tune up your resume and define your personal brand, and you are already prepared to invest in resume writers and career coaches, put a video bio on your to-do list. It could be the difference that will get you that much-coveted interview.

Paper Route Jobs Pros and Cons for Kids

Paper Route Jobs Pros and Cons for Kids Paper Route Jobs Pros and Cons for Kids Movies, television shows, and Broadway plays have popularized (even glamorized) the perennial  paper route for kids. Perhaps your child has watched The Paper Brigade. The Disney classic stars 14-year-old Gunther Wheeler, who moves to a new town and gets a job as a local paperboy because he needs money to buy a concert ticket for a girl he likes. But are your children ready for a newspaper route job? If your son or daughter wants to get a part-time job to earn some extra cash above his or her allowance, then a paper route might be a great opportunity. Delivering newspapers is one of the most common tried-and-true ways to earn money, and has been the first job for many children ever since Schwinn started making bicycles. However, such jobs are increasingly scarce. Many newspapers have shut down or reduced the number of editions they sell. Additionally, some papers now rely on adult paper delivery services rather than hiring youngsters the way they used to. However, lets start with valuable life lessons your child will learn about money. Collecting Money If your child’s route includes collections, asking for payment is a great money skill to master. He will learn to responsibly  handle money that isn’t his, and it will help him become more assertive when dealing with others. Unexpected Extra Income Extra tips can teach your child a valuable lesson about how to handle extra money that he wasnt expecting. Financial Consequences It may come as a surprise, but newspaper couriers (even as young as 12) do suffer penalties, namely when it comes to complaints. If someone on your childs route files a complaint, it’s deducted from their paycheck. Penalties vary but each complaint can cost $2 to $3.   Earning Tips Paper delivery routes often have customers that tip, whether it is weekly or just at Christmas time. Punctuality Paper routes depend on punctuality of the paper delivery. Your child will learn to deliver the papers by a specified time each morning. Freedom One of the best things about having a paper route is that other than having papers delivered by a certain time, paper deliverers have the freedom to do their route as quickly as they want, in the order that they want; and they don’t have to dress up to do it! Routes Can Be Shared If you have two or three family members who want to share a route so they don’t have to work as many days, this is usually just fine. Another idea: have one person prepare the papers and have someone else manage deliveries. Lets Take a Look at the Cons Unpredictable Weather Just like the mail, snow, sleet, and rain cannot stop the newspaper delivery person; your child will be facing adverse weather conditions and might need to be driven when the weather gets too fierce. Early Morning Hours Newspapers have to arrive early, many times by 5:00 in the morning. Keep in mind, your child will have to prepare the papers first, which means they might have to be up as early as 2:00 AM to get the papers out on time. Collecting Money Some paper routes include collections, and it can be intimidating for some children to ask strangers for money. Keep your child’s personality in mind if his route includes collecting money. Depending on the neighborhood, a kid with cash in his pocket can become a target for crime. Because of the scarcity of newspaper routes, some kids are turning to  pet sitting jobs,  dog walking jobs, or theyre learning  how to run a lemonade stand. All of these are viable alternatives. Whichever way they go, theyll learn life-long lessons.
